Demons

It’s late. I’ve left this late again. So much for commitments, even if they’re only commitments I make with myself. Well, I say “commitments”, plural. Really I just mean “commitment”, singular. And that sole commitment is “write something once a week”. Evidently, I struggle to keep up with that, so God only knows how the hell it is I manage to drag myself out of slumber each morning and make my way onto a train five times out of seven.

I feel as though I’ve got demons bothering me again. Are they out to get me? Are they a manifestation of my own sloth and self-disbelief? Are they an excuse for me to not actually do anything? I wonder if doctors ever have demons. “Sorry, I couldn’t perform surgery today, I’ve got demons.” Or taxi drivers. “Mind if we stop by The Underworld on the way? The demons have taken over.”

Either way, the pesky critters / incarnate evil / imagination figments (*delete as applicable) will have to wait another week to be exorcised. By then, they may have even taken over me completely, in which case it might be interesting to see what actually happens here. If anything at all.

Billed as “Psychedelic Afro rock” by its own YouTube description, the following track has burrowed its way into my psyche with summertime, African-style beats. Very few things have ever made me want to don a headdress composed entirely of tropical fruits and shimmy along with a troop of carnival dancers, but the uncontrollable hip-shaking naturally occurs whenever I’ve heard this.

Once again, I feel loath to include a video link here, since a visual stimulus usually overrides the sound intake when you’re trying to decide whether you like something or not. These visuals of green screen dancers and idiosyncratically flying Arabic script aren’t exactly the first things that come to my mind when listening. Like I said, I think of carnival dancers and fruit on your head. If you’re a decent person, you’ll avert your gaze after you click play and enjoy the sounds triggered by two simple words: BULLHORN ALERT!
