The animals have totally got it right; winter should be all about hibernation. Natural darkness and artificial heat really just serve to induce sleep or at least mild lethargy, so of course, humans in their infinite wisdom maintain the same societal hours of the day all year round. Forget the fact that virtually all of us are too tired to do anything. You know, like, write a meaningful blog article.
Still, to offset the winter energy drought, living, working and playing don’t seem as heavy during the summer, leaving us with bundles of energy and free time in the daylight to be more active than usual. At least we’ll get to experience that again in about six months or so. But for now, tiredness takes over and we all know you shouldn’t operate machinery when you’re struggling to keep your eyes open.
Next week (assuming I get my arse in gear and not fob this thing off with another ridiculous excuse about hibernating), I have a plan… a festive plan for content that will effectively tide us over for the Yuletide season. Because who wants to do any extra strenuous activity during Christmas?
When it does become summer in six months time, it should ideally be the perfect seasonal time to listen to some reggae ska sounds, like this. But that doesn’t mean the season should dictate what is good music. Surely if something’s enjoyable, it’s enjoyable all year round.
That’s why I enjoy this now, whilst maintaining the idea that I’d also enjoy it when the natural days are longer and warmer. And it’s acceptable to sit outside drinking alcohol. Actually, scratch that, it’s perfectly acceptable to do that now, only instead of lounging in the sun, feeling warm with a cool drink, the wine is actually hot, you’re actually cold, and you’re shielded from the outdoors by a small wooden shack.
