Freedom To Drive

It’s been a year since I was first allowed to drive a motorised vehicle on Britain’s roads. Apparently all I needed to do was not fuck up a simple drive around various areas for forty-or-so minutes and not piss off the woman who was judging me. It all seems so easy in hindsight.

The last twelve months of automobile-related adventures have largely consisted of carrying out my daily commute over and over, with the occasional excursion to break the routine. There’s very little else to report on that, which leaves me pondering that even though I have the freedom to drive anywhere now, I don’t actually grab at the opportunity.

Once upon a time (and many other times around that time for that matter), I had high hopes, aspirations, fantastical visions that the ability to drive would revolutionise my entire life. And yet life on the other side of the pass certificate has very much stayed the same, if only slightly more convenient. This is the point where the existentialism sets in.

And this is the point where I tell myself to stop being so existential, stop over-analysing every little thing and just get on with it. I believe it was Shania Twain what once said in a smarmy, derisive tone: “pfft, okay, so you got a car…”

Did you know that “Maskindans” is Norwegian for “machine dance”? It’s even pronounced the same and everything. Was it the presence of the letter K that threw you off? Anyway…

It’s not doing too badly for a tune that had its first life in the early 80s. Now with some electrifying production magic chucked at it and det originel vocalist on board for the revamp, this Kraftwerk-esque bit of noise is full of nice wonky sounds that have intrigued me and compelled me to keep listening to this. Plus, the chorus has a nice sing-along element to it, which is incredible considering I don’t know a jot of Norwegian.
