Another Shooting Happened

Less than six months ago (I repeat: Less than six months ago), I wrote a thing about how anyone (mainly in America) consciously decides that they want to own a gun is – in the nicest possible way – a fucking lunatic. Like, actually out-of-their-tree insane. It mostly came off the back of the USA’s biggest mass shooting in history taking place in Las Vegas. It just so happened that a few home friends were visiting there at the time, heightening my level of concern (those friends are fine and returned home safe and well, by the way).

It might not have been clear, but ultimately the thing I wrote was really just my way of saying that – in the wake of many, many shooting incidents across the US carried out by civilians who also happen to be complete dipshits – anyone who actively fights or argues in favour of the right to own a gun is, in my personal view, incorrect.

Last week, another shooting happened at a school and the kid who did it had a history of issues and anger problems and zurrba-durrbl-blrrbl-blabl-you-already-know-this-story. But for once, it seems like the tide may be turning slightly. Yes the news media has reported on the guy who did it, and shown his mugshot, and delved into his history, and given him the fame and notoriety he was probably craving in the first place. But reporting was largely minimal in comparison to previous similar incidents, and especially in comparison to the level of activism displayed by the survivors.

As someone on the other side of the Atlantic who’s inching ever closer to 30 with each passing day, it’s pretty much pointless me throwing my into the ring my opinion of something happening in an American high school. I mean who cares, right? But while I’m here, I’ll hope that perhaps the current generation of youngsters will finally be the ones to get shit done.

Perhaps the change in gun law could be as simple as shooting the purchaser in the leg, arm or buttocks before asking them if they still want to buy the gun. If they do, maybe another non-fatal shot or three might do it. If not, they’re a fucking idiot and should be classed mentally unfit to own one. Maybe that’s just me though.

However, whenever and if-ever the gun crisis gets resolved, it might be nice visit America again. Until then, I won’t. I’m scared. If, by any chance, someone from America has actually stumbled upon this, I’d like to tell you in no uncertain terms that I’m scared – actually scared – of going anywhere near your country. Call it an overreaction, call it irrational, I just think your tourism opportunities could be boosted if you had “you probably won’t get killed randomly” as a selling point.

Control people’s access to guns. This isn’t bloody difficult.

It’s uncanny how a music video can ruin the experience of a song. At least that’s my personal view of this one. It’s been a constant lingering presence in my audio sphere lately and I probably never would’ve worried about how it’s promotional video clip looked if it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve included it here.

Just click play and shut your eyes or look away for a few minutes. Hopefully, you too shall experience a funky electronic bop-along that’s far more deserving of the stop-motion hand claps, overly exaggerated dancing and green-screen overload it’s been afforded.
